What Causes Tooth Sensitivity and How to Treat

Tooth sensitivity is a common dental issue that causes discomfort or pain when consuming hot, cold, sweet, or acidic foods and drinks. It usually occurs when the protective enamel wears down or when gums recede, exposing the underlying dentin layer of the tooth. This layer contains tiny tubules that lead to the tooth’s nerve, making it more sensitive to external stimuli. Common causes of tooth sensitivity include aggressive brushing, tooth decay, gum disease, teeth grinding, and frequent consumption of acidic foods and beverages.

Treating tooth sensitivity depends on its cause, but there are several effective solutions to reduce discomfort. Using a desensitizing toothpaste can help block the pathways to the nerves, while switching to a soft-bristled toothbrush and brushing gently can prevent further enamel damage. Avoiding highly acidic foods and maintaining good oral hygiene are also essential. In more severe cases, your dentist may recommend treatments such as fluoride applications, dental bonding, or gum treatments to protect exposed areas. Regular dental visits ensure proper diagnosis and long-term relief from sensitivity.
